We spoke with Felipe Mirez, Visual Director at Falcon Northwest in Medford, Oregon about his experience in working across different industries, challenges he’s faced as a CG artist and how HDR Light Studio plays a key part in his workflow.
Congratulations to Felipe and his team for being awarded ‘Best Regional TV & Multi-Market Cable – Use of Animation’.
Lightmap:What sparked your interest in animation and becoming a Multimedia Animation Artist?
Felipe:Long ago as a kid, I was watching Star Wars for the first time. I was awe-stuck looking by the animation and this is where it all began. I started pursuing stop-motion and 2D animations as hobby and I just couldn’t stop loving it. Fortunately, the new world of CGI started to flourish in the early 90’s and I was fortunate to witness and experience the trend. Continue reading →
Create-Visions work with exceptional 3D artists and science professionals with decades of experience to produce illustrations and animations of the tiny world inside us. They are passionate about scientific visualisation and medical animation, using Cinema 4D and Octane Render inconjunction with HDR Light Studio for lighting.
“I use HDR Light Studio daily for my work. The big advantage is that it saves times when it comes to lighting the scenes. The awesome part is that I adapt extremely simply existing HDRI maps and enhance them with other light sources. I feel far more creatively free”. Andreas Fülscher – Create-Visions
The Dose team needed to create 5 different, unique illustrations for this project in a very short amount of time. While 2d digital painting was used for most of the pieces, artist Chris Boyd thought it was a great opportunity to use CINEMA 4D, Octane Render and, of course, HDR Light Studio.
The narrative for this holiday image was, “design the coolest gingerbread house.” In which Chris had to interpret the young students drawing into a fully realized 3d illustration.
Such a mouth watering set of images have been shared with us – delicious, we are drooling. Even better, they include a tribute to the software used in making them – Octane Render and HDR Light Studio logos are included. OK, we can’t wait any longer… we’re off to the cafe whilst you enjoy the rest of these images. Continue reading →
We came across a stunning piece of work by Japanese 3D artist Masayoshi Shinohara. A lifelike portrait of Nozomi Sasaki, a fashion model in Japan. We were pleased to discover the shot was lit with the help of HDR Light Studio. So we got in touch with Masayoshi to find out how HDR Light Studio helped with the lighting process in Maya with Arnold Render.
“I took photos for reference. For the test, I used an exterior HDRI for lighting. But when I compared the reference with test render image, I could see I needed more natural sunlight and soft shadows, and I noticed the specular and reflections were not high enough.
I used HDR Light Studio to settle these problems easily. LightPaint helped me a lot. Increasing/decreasing light in a moment. I could change the light direction exactly as I wanted.
The realistic reflections in the eye, and skin specular – these are made using HDR Light Studio’s preset light source content. There are lots to choose from. Then I made fine adjustments in each light’s properties. It’s a simple workflow.
My final render is using only one SkydomeLight with a HDRI map from HDR Light Studio.”
Additional Project Details:
Modeling and details done in ZBrush.
Texture painting in Mari.
Hair using GeoMayaHair.
Rendered in Maya, Arnold (alShader).

An updated HDR Light Studio plug-in connection for CINEMA 4D R19 is now available for customers to download or for trials.
CINEMA 4D R19 is a fantastic new update from Maxon. The new viewport reflections for IBL and Area Lights work fantastic with HDR Light Studio, giving even more live feedback during the lighting process. Plus the new ProRender renderer is also working great with HDR Light Studio.
This new 2017.1123 build of the Cinema 4D Connection also fixes several bugs:
Fixed: C4DtoA hook stopped working after Arnold 2.1.2 update
Fixed: C4DtoA Area light textures are not loading correctly
Fixed: Bug where selecting an object, then copy and paste it (either CTRL+C then CTRL +V, or CTRL+Drag) the HDR Light Studio Environment was being selected.
Welcome to the first episode of 3D TALK – where I talk to 3D artists and learn about their journey into 3D, the tools they use and anything else interesting that crops up.
I had a really enjoyable conversation with Polish 3D artist Wojciech Portnicki. We chatted about his path into 3D, his use of MODO with Octane Render working for Harman in China, and much more. The sound quality is poor, as it was recorded over skype, but stick with it, he has a great story. Not many 3D artists start out as librarians.
