CINEMA 4D R19 Support Released

An updated HDR Light Studio plug-in connection for CINEMA 4D R19 is now available for customers to download or for trials.

CINEMA 4D R19 is a fantastic new update from Maxon. The new viewport reflections for IBL and Area Lights work fantastic with HDR Light Studio, giving even more live feedback during the lighting process. Plus the new ProRender renderer is also working great with HDR Light Studio.

This new 2017.1123 build of the Cinema 4D Connection also fixes several bugs:
Fixed: C4DtoA hook stopped working after Arnold 2.1.2 update
Fixed: C4DtoA Area light textures are not loading correctly
Fixed: Bug where selecting an object, then copy and paste it (either CTRL+C then CTRL +V, or CTRL+Drag) the HDR Light Studio Environment was being selected.

MODO Artist: Kaoru Toyoguchi – JVCKENWOOD

The Juicy Details

Adjustable Light Handles

Since HDR Light Studio 1, lights have been positioned by their centres, as indicated by the orange dot – we call this the handle. But sometimes when using LightPaint to position lights on the 3D model, you don’t want to place a light by its centre. HDR Light Studio 5.4 introduces adjustable handles that can be positioned anywhere within the light.

The handle can be easily moved using the sliders or by dragging directly in the Light preview image.

In the image below, you can see how the light handle has been moved to the top edge of the light preview and that LightPaint has been used in the Render View to position the light by its edge.

Advanced Rotations

3D mapped lights are no longer limited to being orientated ‘normal’ to the lighting sphere, or for area lights, facing directly at the LightPaint location. X and Y rotations allow lights to be orientated in any direction. The light orientation is controlled with X,Y,Z rotations click and drag controls, these work relative to the light’s current orientation, so are easy to use.

Full 3 axis rotations allow new content to be added into a HDRI map and precisely orientated to simulate any 3D positioning. This provides far greater control over your existing HDRI maps.

In the example below new windows, signs, a wall and much more has been added to the existing HDRI map. This is only possible due to the new rotation controls. Even the tube lighting in the ceiling has been boosted with new lights positioned to match up exactly with those existing tube lights.

Area Lights can now point in any direction and are not limited to face the LightPaint location. So LightPaint can be used to position the light, but the direction it faces can easily be adjusted. In the example below the light has been positioned using LightPaint but orientated to uplight the ogres face. It is true that orientating lights in 3D software is easy, the difference using HDR Light Studio, is the fluidity and ease in which the lighting can be created, adjusted and positioned in a very creative way – concentrating on the lighting effect in the final shot and not worrying about moving lights in 3D space.

Area Light Rotations

Rotation Modes
Rotation Modes allow the user to change the orientation characteristics of a light, providing useful behaviours for the lighting artist. There are 4 Rotation Modes:

Rotation Modes

Free: Behaves the same as when the Advanced Rotation setting is off (lights are normal to the lighting sphere and area lights face the LightPaint location), but you are able to manually adjust the X,Y,Z rotations of the light.

V-Lock: Light is always vertical, and aligned with the LightPaint location – This is ideal for pack shots, maintaining the vertical alignment of lights.

H-Lock: Light is always horizontal, but aligned with the LightPaint location.

Fixed: Ignores the LightPaint location, default to horizontal and aligned with world X axis – Ideal for placing the light over a car with a fixed orientation.

The X,Y,Z rotations are applied as an offset to these default behaviours, and this offset is maintained even when moving the light. So for example if V-Lock mode is used, the light can be tilted a little off vertical and wherever the light is place it will face a little off vertical.


New Light Sources

32 additional Studio Light Sources have been added to the Preset library.
(Customers should download Studio Lights 2 to get these new lights, for trial users they are included in the trial lights at lo-resolution)

Double click on any slider label text to reset the slider to its default value.

First of all what do Electric Art do, and what’s your job there?
Electric Art are a high end creative image house working out of Sydney, Australia. We create mostly still images for advertising using retouching and 3D, but we’re doing an increasing amount of animation work ranging from online to TV. My main job is that of Creative Director so I basically oversee all works going out of Electric Art. I also head up the 3D department. I tend to get fairly involved in the pre-production process, estimating jobs etc.

HDR Light Studio brings light to the CINEWARE launch

If you work within the world of computer graphics, unless you have been hiding under a rock for the last few months, you will have seen the big news coming from Maxon and Adobe – the launch of CINEWARE!

In an industry first, Maxon have built a live connection within After Effects so users can work with their 3D content inside their compositing workflow. You can import native CINEMA 4D scenes as assets in After Effects and utilize CINEMA 4D’s powerful multi-pass workflow as layers to achieve your vision. Update the CINEMA 4D scene at any time and you’ll instantly see the results inside After Effects. There’s no need to wait for long renders or manage intermediate files because the CINEMA 4D render engine is built right in After Effects. Your 3D workflow has never been easier.

Here at Lightmap we are very excited by this new solution that breaks down the barriers between 3D and compositing. Our excitement grew when we discovered HDR Light Studio had been used to light some of the content used for the big launch. One of our users lit the impressive Whiskey animation with fluid simulations using HDR Light Studio. It was perfect for such refractive and reflective materials to use HDR Light Studio to place the highlights perfectly. New HDR Light Studio – 3ds Max Live Connection

3ds Max and HDR Light Studio 4

The HDR Light Studio Live Connection for 3ds Max has had a significant upgrade and is available for download today.

The first release supported a live workflow with V-Ray only. Now 3ds Max users can enjoy a real-time HDR Light Studio workflow with: MentalRay, iRay, V-Ray, Maxwell Render, Octane Render and Thea Render. The plug-in also supports 3ds Max / 3ds Max Design –  2013 and 2014 releases.

In addition, the new plug-in has also been unified into a single panel for Live controls and Scene Sync to LiveLight. Plus the installation has been simplified into a single installer exe file.

This five part “How To” will show the workflows involved in shading and lighting a hypothetical CGI job for the advertising industry, an industry notorious for tough deadlines and fast turnarounds. During these lessons we will explore techniques to quickly create photorealistic images with image based lighting, as we take a simple model and use interactive ray-traced re-rendering to deliver rapid iterations for look development. These lessons will focus on using the physically plausible shading system in RenderMan Studio to achieve our final polished result.
