Ars Thanea have been HDR Light Studio users since version 1.5. We caught up with them recently to find out how HDR Light Studio 5 was helping their lighting workflow.

“HDR Light Studio is definitely great software. The most important thing while using it is the huge improvement on efficiency for the whole Ars Thanea team. We can speed up production processes still keeping the highest standards of quality in our projects, which is priority number one for us.”

“HDR Light Studio is a perfect tool for product renders. I like it both with lighting up various materials, my favourite one is metal, and for creating the light for the main scene. While working on one of the recent projects, HBO Oscar Night, I used HDR Light Studio to get rid the reflection from the statue edges and to create the overall scene mood. I love this possibility of adding all the little lights – it allows me to present every single detail and show the product in a full glory. I also do appreciate that the software works very fast and has a enormous impact on my workflow.”

“I like to use HDR Light Studio in projects that combine a photo shoot with 3D CGI. It’s so great that I am able to recreate and match the whole lighting set up so easily with HDR Light Studio. Most of all I love that, despite the simplicity of user interface, there is a huge variety of individual, realistic lighting. One of my favourite features is the Light Paint option, which lets you add highlights easily, right where you want them to be.”

“I have worked in the CGI industry over 10 years. I may say now, that over that time the automotive field became my hobby horse, which you can clearly see through my portfolio. They know this very well in Ars Thanea, and I’m consequently assigned to such projects. I’m responsible for lighting, shading and the rendering stages, so HDR Light Studio is like my second hand. The software is just irreplaceable in lighting-up the models in the scene, but I also use it to create the HDRI reflection maps of every part of the vehicle model – such as body, wheels, headlights, etc. Then I put the main HDRI maps to the “reflection” feature in the Light Dome, which makes combining the extra reflections much easier in the compositing process.”

3ds Max Artist: PK3D Studio

Relonch In Hand 1

PK3D Studio has produced a stunning range of CGI images for the upcoming camera for iPhone – Relonch Camera.

The images were created with 3ds Max, V-Ray and HDR Light Studio. Every shot was lit using HDR Light Studio and the quality of the work is simply stunning. Piotr says “Without HDR Light Studio, lighting these shots would have taken much longer. It was so easy to adjust the lights appearance with the real-time feedback in HDR Light Studio’s render view”.

Her are some examples of the lighting for these shots. It doesn’t look pretty as an image, but it’s how those lights interact with the 3D model and materials that’s important. Each light has been placed using the LightPaint feature, clicking directly on the 3D model in the render view to put the light where it’s needed on the HDRI map.

Here’s some more lovely CGI shots from this project! They are not photographs… honestly.
Thanks so much for sharing Piotr!

HDR Light Studio – CINEMA 4D live connection released

HDR Light Studio for CINEMA 4D

Lightmap’s HDR Light Studio brings lighting simplicity to CINEMA 4D

Lightmap announces a new HDR Light Studio Live plug-in for Maxon CINEMA 4D bringing simplicity to HDRI lighting. The new plug-in works with all versions of CINEMA 4D R13 and higher and supports additional market leading renderers, V-Ray, Maxwell and Octane Render.

HDR Light Studio lets artists easily create and edit HDRI lighting in real-time. With the CINEMA 4D Live Connection artists quickly develop the custom HDRI map in HDR Light Studio and see its lighting effect evolve in the Interactive Render. Use the LightPaint feature to click on the 3D model in the CINEMA 4D viewport to position the lighting effects. This ‘click to light’ process will dramatically speed up the lighting process with precise and perfect final results.

cinema4d_live_blog_launch2

“HDR Light Studio has completely changed the way I work and light my scenes in CINEMA 4D. Using the live plugin for C4D is a real timesaver and it speeds up my workflow a lot. I can now choose between Cinema 4D’s Advanced Render, V-Ray or Maxwell Render and get almost instant feedback on how different materials interact with different lighting setups. I also photograph HDR environments for CG lighting and I love the option to import my own HDRs and very quickly combine them with studio lights or enhance them using other available options inside HDR Light Studio to make the perfect lighting setup.” Frederik Tennholt, Owner/CG artist at Good Monday

Main HDR Light Studio features for CINEMA 4D users:
•    Non-destructive, interactive HDRI map creation and editing app
•    Live Connection between HDR Light Studio and CINEMA 4D
•    Supports CINEMA 4D Renderer, V-Ray, Maxwell and Octane Render (1.23+)
•    LightPaint – Point and click light source positioning and selection in CINEMA 4D
•    Push scenes into HDR Light Studio’s 3D view for a fast LightPaint experience on large scenes
•    Highly controllable procedural light sources
•    Library of HDR lights, including HDR captures of studio light sources
•    Layered lighting system with blend modes
•    Enhance existing HDRI maps via localised adjustments to color, exposure, and saturation
•    Augment existing HDRI maps with additional light sources
•    HDR Light Studio lighting project embedded in the CINEMA 4D scene

Octane for MODO beta has begun!

Octane for MODO

The Octane Render for MODO beta has now begun.

I took Octane for a spin in MODO and was delighted to discover that HDR Light Studio worked out of the box because Octane can use the MODO environment for its environment lighting too! Yay! I was able to use LightPaint in the MODO viewport to place lights and see the lighting update in an instant in Octane. I have a pretty decent consumer grade graphics card (GTX780) and it was soooo fast!! I was able to take my existing watch demo scene setup for the MODO renderer, and add the Octane materials all within half an hour…. without reading the manual too. So the integration is very intuitive and easy to use, and I found myself really having some fun using it. The quality of the image I was creating was really great and depth of field noise resolved really fast. I’m looking forward to having another play, maybe with a car model next time.

The beauty of HDR Light Studio is that your lighting will work with any renderer as it’s all coming from a HDRI map – it’s the only truly portable lighting format. As new renderers come to MODO we look forward to supporting them too!

Do check out Octane for MODO at the Otoy website: http://render.otoy.com/shop/modo_plugin.php

Recom Farmhouse – Mustang 2015 Launch

It was great to hear from HDR Light Studio user Richard Levene, at Recom Farmhouse New York, about their role in the Ford Mustang teaser images.

Mustang GT

“Recom Farmhouse’ had the privilege to work on the teaser images for the upcoming release of the new Ford Mustang model. In combination with agency Team Detroit and photographer Uli Heckmann, we created a collection of images with a mixture of CGI and traditional photography. For the images with CGI cars, HDR Light Studio was used extensively in the lighting process with VRED, from previs lighting on set with the photographer to the refined lighting for the final renders. The lighting was kept pretty natural using a HDRI captured on location, with an extra light or two to boost the sun contribution or to bring up a specific detail on the car. HDR Light Studio’s ‘LightPaint’ feature let us place the lights exactly where needed. We can’t live without it now!” says Richard.

Mustang GT

What’s interesting about this customer’s story is that HDR Light Studio is being used to place only small modifications to the HDRI lighting captured on location – but those small enhancements, precisely placed, are making all the difference to the dynamic visual quality of the final images. Being able to make these creative lighting edits to your HDRI map on the fly, whilst in a live connection with your interactive render session, is what HDR Light Studio is all about.
