Amador Valenzuela is Founder & Creative Director of Black Book Studio. Black Book Studio is a creative studio focused on design & animation for the entertainment, advertising, and independent entrepreneur communities.
Black Book recently used HDR Light Studio for lighting the opening shots in the movie John Wick 2. We got in touch to find out more about Amador’s history in 3D, the tools he uses, and how HDR Light Studio was used for John Wick 2.
Amador, how did you get started in 3D?
I’ve always had a passion for drawing and painting, and I knew I wanted to work in a creative field when I grew up. In high school, I took scenic design classes where we built sets for plays. It taught me how to work in a team environment which I loved. 3D seemed to be a mixture of those traditional mediums taken to the next level. I figured demand for that kind of work would only grow over time, so I made a strategic decision to study “computer animation” in College.

It’s about fluid dynamics, color, taste, and chocolate and caramel in a loving embrace. Everything was created in 3D and sculpted in Mudbox. Lighting was done in HDR Light Studio 5 and rendered with Maya/Mental Ray.
We have been doing some R&D recently with Octane for Nuke plug-in developer. This has led to a really cool new feature we are exploring – a Frame Buffer in the HDR Light Studio interface. This is not available in our release software yet and is something we are still developing and evaluating.

3rd floor company CGI works mainly in the area of visualizing transportation/cars. It was founded by the German car photographer Steffen Schrägle. He has been working for all big car brands and mostly over the last 6 years was able to work with CGI processes in car photography. That was the main reason he has set up 3rd floor company CGI in order to provide quick turnaround of CGI imagery yet still maintaining the high standards that clients are looking for. An interview with Bruce Bigelow, Creative Director and HDR Light Studio user
First of all what do Electric Art do, and what’s your job there?
Electric Art are a high end creative image house working out of Sydney, Australia. We create mostly still images for advertising using retouching and 3D, but we’re doing an increasing amount of animation work ranging from online to TV. My main job is that of Creative Director so I basically oversee all works going out of Electric Art. I also head up the 3D department. I tend to get fairly involved in the pre-production process, estimating jobs etc.
Hi David (Magnum1976), looking at your web site, you work on a wide range of creative visual projects in both 2D and 3D. How did your career start, in 2D or 3D?
I am self-taught since I was a kid. I did not go to art or design school, but in 1999, I was able to join a communication agency thanks to my graphic skills on Photoshop, Xpress and Indesign. But after 6 years in 2D, I wanted to learn 3D and went on a 3 month training course to get started. I continued to train myself after this with tutorials on 3ds Max.
How did you come to choose MODO as your main 3D software?
During my 3ds Max training, I read a 3D magazine where there was an article about Modo 202, showing the ability to paint directly on the 3D model. I wanted to know more, so I put 3ds Max aside for Modo. The early days in Modo were difficult I must admit it, but once tamed, I have never left it.
