Lightmap recently visited the Wonder Vision studios in Henley-on-Thames to interview co-founders, Joe Thomas and James Elderton about the companies university origins, their passion for detail, and how HDR Light Studio has made their lighting workflow more efficient.
After spending a short afternoon with Joe and James of Wonder Vision, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration for their artistic passion and innate sense of confidence – it wasn’t a case of ‘if’ they were to be successful all those years ago, but when.
Joe and James met as fresh-faced students studying Product Design at Loughborough University; both ambitious to do more than graduate and work at an agency creating someone else’s vision – they wanted to create their own. Whilst on placement during their third year, Joe and James envisioned a plan to launch their own CGI production studio offering high-end photoreal services. My latestproject here at Lightmap involved learning how to create realistic knitted material in order to develop a teddy bear. Developing hair on a model is a technique I most recently learnt when working on my Christmas Project, however, the challenge of this particular project involved learning how to create a realistic wool that would wrap-around my model correctly.
HDR Light Studio provides plug-in Connections to a wide range of 3D software, including 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D and MODO.
When a new update is released for a supported 3D package, we begin to receive numerous support emails asking when our HDR Light Studio plug-in connection will be updated to support the relevant release. A hot topic from our users recently is the Cinema 4D R20 update.
We appreciate that sometimes you as a customer are frustrated that HDR Light Studio do not have a ready-made update or definitive date of release for a particular connection – we are too. Therefore, we thought it would be helpful to explain why we are unable to release updated plug-in connections as quickly as some customers would like. Continue reading →
In May of this year, Lightmap’s creators, Mark and Simon, had the privilege of attending the first ever Total Chaos event held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event was a perfect opportunity to meet our customers, introduce our software to artists within the industry, and watch some incredibly exciting talks from fellow industry professionals.
One key speaker over the weekend-long event was 3D artist Brendan McCaffrey, a long-term user of HDR Light Studio. Brendan discussed his array of projects for leading names such as EA Hasbro and Hot Wheels; his tendency to take on complex projects with tight deadlines, including his extensive work on ‘The Complete Bike Owners Manual,’ and how HDR Light Studio has transformed his images over the last ten years.

Marc Greyvenstein is a 3D Artist at The Mill in London; a studio home to world-class visual effects, cutting-edge technology and creative excellence. With over 15-years of industry experience, specialising in lighting, texturing and look development, Marc takes us through his workflow when re-creating the McLaren 570S model, lit stunningly with HDR Light Studio.
My project at Lightmap this month was to create dirt and dust materials to be applied to a variety of wooden, metal and painted objects. The development of materials is a very challenging subject and by carrying out this project I was able to enhance my material skills further in order to produce the most realistic renders.
To make a realistic, high quality CGI image, you need everything to be right; a perfect 3D model with realistic shaders/materials that react to light (illuminations and reflections) correctly, with render settings that balance sensible render times with a high image quality. Only when all of those ingredients are working well you can start lighting a shot to a high standard using HDR Light Studio.

Lightmap:What sparked your interest in animation and becoming a Multimedia Animation Artist?
Felipe:Long ago as a kid, I was watching Star Wars for the first time. I was awe-stuck looking by the animation and this is where it all began. I started pursuing stop-motion and 2D animations as a hobby and I just couldn’t stop loving it. Fortunately, the new world of CGI started to flourish in the early 90’s and I was fortunate to witness and experience the trend. Continue reading →
