We had a chat with Oddur, one of our student users of HDR Light Studio, who had been sending us some amazing images created using HDR Light Studio Educational Edition….
Hi Oddur, where are you studying and what course are you on?
I’m currently in the Professional Photography program at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California. The school offers a full time 3-year BFA program that teaches you all aspects of commercial photography. For a few years now, CGI has been offered as an elective course.
An interview with Bruce Bigelow, Creative Director and HDR Light Studio user
First of all what do Electric Art do, and what’s your job there?
Electric Art are a high end creative image house working out of Sydney, Australia. We create mostly still images for advertising using retouching and 3D, but we’re doing an increasing amount of animation work ranging from online to TV. My main job is that of Creative Director so I basically oversee all works going out of Electric Art. I also head up the 3D department. I tend to get fairly involved in the pre-production process, estimating jobs etc.
Hi Jeremy, could you tell me in a few sentences what ‘Dekode’ does and who you do it for?
We’re a UK based award winning industrial design consultancy working in sectors ranging from consumer electronics, medical and scientific through to transport. We enjoy a central role in the design strategy and brand expression made by some of the world’s leading manufacturing companies. Our experience ranges from digital cameras for Philips and audio products for Grundig to aircraft interior work for Virgin Atlantic. We are proud to have won both Red Dot and IF design awards for the last four years running for our work with audio brand Revo (www.revo.co.uk).
Hi David (Magnum1976), looking at your web site, you work on a wide range of creative visual projects in both 2D and 3D. How did your career start, in 2D or 3D?
I am self-taught since I was a kid. I did not go to art or design school, but in 1999, I was able to join a communication agency thanks to my graphic skills on Photoshop, Xpress and Indesign. But after 6 years in 2D, I wanted to learn 3D and went on a 3 month training course to get started. I continued to train myself after this with tutorials on 3ds Max.
How did you come to choose MODO as your main 3D software?
During my 3ds Max training, I read a 3D magazine where there was an article about Modo 202, showing the ability to paint directly on the 3D model. I wanted to know more, so I put 3ds Max aside for Modo. The early days in Modo were difficult I must admit it, but once tamed, I have never left it.
The images were created with 3ds Max, V-Ray and HDR Light Studio. Every shot was lit using HDR Light Studio and the quality of the work is simply stunning. Piotr says “Without HDR Light Studio, lighting these shots would have taken much longer. It was so easy to adjust the lights appearance with the real-time feedback in HDR Light Studio’s render view”.
Her are some examples of the lighting for these shots. It doesn’t look pretty as an image, but it’s how those lights interact with the 3D model and materials that’s important. Each light has been placed using the LightPaint feature, clicking directly on the 3D model in the render view to put the light where it’s needed on the HDRI map.

HDR Light Studio is changing the way 3D artists light their shots in Cinema 4D.
Here are a range of shots and details from Michel Manfredi, a new user of HDR Light Studio. He is delighted with his new lighting workflow and the results he is getting using HDR Light Studio with Maxwell Render for Cinema 4D. It’s amazing to see how lighting has brought these shots and the materials to life.
Look at the lovely details in those reflections. Plus the metallic sparkles zing from the HDRI reflections.
In the case of this lipstick shot, the lighting is really simple, but perfect. HDR Light Studio allowed Michel to get the lights in the right place and control the appearance of the reflections with ease. The final results render fast using a single HDRI map for all lighting and reflections. We love the sub-surface catering on the top of the lipstick too.
We were delighted to be sent this amazing work by HDR Light Studio user Anton Bessonov. He says ” I love HDR Light Studio, because I do not know how I used to live without it! It greatly simplifies the lives of those who are engaged in rendering.”
It was great to hear from HDR Light Studio user Richard Levene, at Recom Farmhouse New York, about their role in the Ford Mustang teaser images.
“Recom Farmhouse’ had the privilege to work on the teaser images for the upcoming release of the new Ford Mustang model. In combination with agency Team Detroit and photographer Uli Heckmann, we created a collection of images with a mixture of CGI and traditional photography. For the images with CGI cars, HDR Light Studio was used extensively in the lighting process with VRED, from previs lighting on set with the photographer to the refined lighting for the final renders. The lighting was kept pretty natural using a HDRI captured on location, with an extra light or two to boost the sun contribution or to bring up a specific detail on the car. HDR Light Studio’s ‘LightPaint’ feature let us place the lights exactly where needed. We can’t live without it now!” says Richard.
What’s interesting about this customer’s story is that HDR Light Studio is being used to place only small modifications to the HDRI lighting captured on location – but those small enhancements, precisely placed, are making all the difference to the dynamic visual quality of the final images. Being able to make these creative lighting edits to your HDRI map on the fly, whilst in a live connection with your interactive render session, is what HDR Light Studio is all about. Jomar Machado has produced this stunning image for Shell’s 2014 Calendar. He created the shot using 3ds Max and Mental Ray to render the truck, car and motorbike. The vehicles were lit entirely with HDR Light Studio, used to enhanced an existing HDRI map to perfectly shape the lighting and reflections for a more dynamic final image with an illustrative style.
Jomar used the new HDR Light Studio live connection with 3ds Max to push his 3ds Max scene into HDR Light Studio, where the LiveLight preview window was used to position additional lights onto the HDRI map using the ‘point and click’ light placement tool – LightPaint. Jomar could easily and artistically place highlights and reflections to really sell the 3D form of his model and create the perfect lighting rig. Because the shot was lit entirely with a single HDRI map, then 3ds Max was able to render the final image too!
