About Third Floor Company
Third Floor Company produces high quality CGI projects, specializing in automotive imagery. The company was founded in 2009 by the German car photographer Steffen Schrägle. Since 1999, he has worked for many large car brands and was able to bring the CGI processes into car photography. Third Floor Company was primarily set up to provide a quick turnaround of CGI imagery, whilst maintaining the high-quality standards required by clients.
The photographic experience on-location plus the understanding of CGI processes creates the perfect foundation for a flexible and professional workflow. The photographer’s perspective and understanding are hugely beneficial – from the first moment concept layouts are sent, to the final end product. Over the years, Third Floor Company has developed an effective system not only for data management and preparation for its clients but also for data evaluations, data repair/modeling, through to the final high-end image production. We spoke with Felipe Mirez, Visual Director at Falcon Northwest in Medford, Oregon about his experience of working across different industries, challenges he’s faced as a CG artist and how HDR Light Studio plays a key part in his workflow.
Congratulations to Felipe and his team for being awarded ‘Best Regional TV & Multi-Market Cable – Use of Animation’.
Lightmap:What sparked your interest in animation and becoming a Multimedia Animation Artist?
Felipe:Long ago as a kid, I was watching Star Wars for the first time. I was awe-stuck looking by the animation and this is where it all began. I started pursuing stop-motion and 2D animations as a hobby and I just couldn’t stop loving it. Fortunately, the new world of CGI started to flourish in the early 90’s and I was fortunate to witness and experience the trend. Continue reading →

“I use HDR Light Studio daily for my work. The big advantage is that it saves times when it comes to lighting the scenes. The awesome part is that I adapt extremely simply existing HDRI maps and enhance them with other light sources. I feel far more creatively free”. Andreas Fülscher – Create-Visions

Sonoco-Trident is the world’s fastest growing and most innovative digital brand management business. They have been using HDR Light Studio for 2 years now.
Let’s see what Sonoco-Trident 3D artists have to say about HDR Light Studio software.
The software allows us to very quickly create very realistic lighting set ups for our CGI scenes. It has completely changed how we build our scenes and allowed us to massively improve the quality of renders we produce.
HDR Light Studio is very easy to use, and gives us full control of specific highlights and shadows with its full spectrum of controls, presets and settings.
The software is perfect for creating studio style product shots, which is the bulk of what we do at Trident. It has everything you need to recreate a virtual photography studio on your desktop. Having the ability to ‘drag and drop’ a highlight means you can focus on creativity rather than technical limitations. Prefect for people who aren’t very technical, like me!
Duncan Dix is D&AD awarded Creative Director with 10 years’ experience across Broadcast, Film, Live Event & Print. Duncan lit Audi A3 images with HDR Light Studio and shared his story of lighting with us.
Amador Valenzuela is Founder & Creative Director of Black Book Studio. Black Book Studio is a creative studio focused on design & animation for the entertainment, advertising, and independent entrepreneur communities.
Black Book recently used HDR Light Studio for lighting the opening shots in the movie John Wick 2. We got in touch to find out more about Amador’s history in 3D, the tools he uses, and how HDR Light Studio was used for John Wick 2.
Amador, how did you get started in 3D?
I’ve always had a passion for drawing and painting, and I knew I wanted to work in a creative field when I grew up. In high school, I took scenic design classes where we built sets for plays. It taught me how to work in a team environment which I loved. 3D seemed to be a mixture of those traditional mediums taken to the next level. I figured demand for that kind of work would only grow over time, so I made a strategic decision to study “computer animation” in College.
Alberto Luque Marta used HDR Light Studio for the first time to light his project. We were excited to know about his first impression.
He said “The advantage is quite clear, you have the possibility to create a study light or custom fill light to illuminate the model you are going to light and not use a pre-made one. Continue reading →
